Seasons

Autumnal Glory (2023) chalk, charcoal and pencil on paper, 18×24

This year, the fall was long and rainy, and the drought over the summer meant that the change of season was not as colorful as it has been. Nevertheless, I enjoyed discovering small variations in the shades of brown and orange. These works are not directly from observation, but from the memory of my impression of them.

My favorite seasons are autumn and winter, but spring is too colorful for me to ignore. Each year I make pieces that respond to nature in one way or another. Some years they are dances, some years videos, and some years drawings. This year, the spring was long and rainy, which meant that the flowers stayed in bloom for a long time, so I had more time to absorb them and make art about them. These works are not directly from observation, but from the memory of my impression of them.

Additionally, changes of scenery always inspire me. I have visited Nevada a number of times over the years, and I’ve been trying to capture something of the various environments; desert, mountains, lakes. A lot of folklore about the area centers around the early settlers, which inspired the ghost-like cowboy. Other works are inspired by a visit to Lake Tahoe, CA, and a boat trip which took me to Emerald Bay.

Finally, I have returned to painting, and I have been really enjoying my experiments in gesso, charcoal, acrylic and found objects on canvas. The new canvases are inspired by the natural world, but also by the world of the movies.
