CHRISTY WALSH

Christy Walsh began her artistic life on the stage with her grandmother’s musical theater company,  and this theatricality is evident in all of her work. She honed her skills as a dancer while studying photography, video and philosophy before setting out to make her own multi-media work. She uses a variety of disciplines including: dance, video, and photography, to tell stories. She creates imaginary worlds where characters and settings are rooted in the familiar, but are removed from reality. Her creations are made up of dense layers of images and media that explore such disparate things as physics, philosophy, and history in a dramatic fashion. Her works for the stage have been presented in the United States and in Greece, her artworks have been included in shows in the United States and her award-winning films have been screened in an expanding list that includes more than fifteen countries.

Stories of the Sun God

Seven Golden Birds share valuable secrets. A jilted poet hatches a plot that will eventually unravel the most elusive of the secrets. The Sun God rules with a merciless iron fist and his only friend is a Magical Bird who can transform into all things and all people. In this tale of ruthless information exchange, no human or imaginary bird is untouched by the influence of this lonely ruler who eventually finds freedom while the others meet their deaths. It is a meditation on the nature of power and the importance of knowledge in any age.

VISUAL ART

Delfi, The oracle is absent, the future is uncertain

A trip to Delfi proved to be artistically fruitful, even though Pythia was nowhere to be found. Greece is full of ancient ruins, some of which lie atop other ruins. In my series about Greece

Avgonima

The ancient village of Avgonima is one that I have visited many times. Chios is full of these medieval villages, some of which are ruins, but this one is inhabited by many Chians during the summer.

Mycenae

A trip to Mycenae inspired me to make many artworks based on the tragedies that are meant to have occurred there, the plays written about this possible apocryphal history and the poems of Georgios Sefaris.

The Stranger and the Enemy Are in the Mirror

Using the Greek poet George Sefaris’ references to the Oresteia as a starting point, a narrative unfolds through movement informed by ballet and flamenco in theatrical gestures and costumes that are inspired by Greek art and Kabuki theater.
